Every UPS teamster should read this ! The weak language on staffing mirrors exactly the weak language on technology in this last UPS contract. Members need to understand that economic issues are very important BUT language that enforces working conditions are just as important!

There's another thread on this site that announced the settlement and it all seemed pretty good, so what is it? Was it just fake news? Are there any actual nurses here that can speak to this contract? The author gives a detailed view but who's credible here?

Shades of the "historic UPS contract" that protected Teamsters from automation and hub closures.

The below paragraph is from the Teamsters press release following the Corewell nurses ratification vote:

"The three-year agreement protects more than 10,000 nurses at nine hospitals and campuses and dozens of outpatient clinics. Highlights include a 15 percent wage increase over the life of the agreement, a one-time lump-sum payment on a previously withheld wage increase, a safe staffing committee that allows nurses to confront management directly on nurse-to-patient ratio issues, a new PPO option, and other critical workplace protections."

Toothless Provision

"One wonders if Finn took the time to read the fine print on the Corewell East contract his union negotiated. There is indeed a “safe staffing” reference, but the provision is toothless.

The contract expressly gives Corewell management the right “to determine staffing guidelines or ratios and staffing patterns.” A newly formed nurse staffing committee can make recommendations, but Corewell’s management isn’t required to accept them. If management rejects a recommendation, it merely has to explain why. And the contract expressly provides that nothing the staffing committee does—or doesn’t do—can be challenged through the grievance procedure."

That's the kicker: If hospital management is confronted with understaffing that impacts patients' care and does nothing, end of story pursuant to nurses rights to confront such understaffing.
