In François Laporte’s (President, Teamsters Canada) blog post, he wants you and the 130,000 Teamsters in Canada to believe he is deeply concerned about Trump’s new round of Tariffs, stating “Canada cannot allow this treatment to go unanswered.” On July 20, 2026, Trump officially announced 50% tariffs on specific Canadian goods (covering autos, dairy, and alcohol) by signing three presidential proclamations, likely inspiring the blog post.

In 2025, Trump placed broad 25% tariffs on most Canadian goods and 10% on energy resources took effect in March 2025 following executive actions, which later saw further escalations on steel and aluminum.

In my opinion, what’s lacking in François Laporte’s blog is a hard look in a mirror. The facts are, there are 4 Joint councils and 23 main local unions in Teamsters Canada representing members nationwide. Teamsters Canada, just like USA members and Puerto Rico members elected delegates, attended the 2026 IBT 31^st Convention in Las Vegas and voted on leadership nominations

At the Convention there were 3 Canadian International Vice Presidents nominated, seconded, and they accepted for the OZ slate including François Laporte, Stan Hennessy, President of Local 31 and Craig McInnes, President of Local 938. If my math is correct, in addition to all the Canadian delegates that could have, and definitely the 9 Canadian delegates at a microphone with a captive audience, should have voiced their concerns and voted for a change in the direction of the Teamsters Union!

Multiple Choice, which ones do you think correctly describe what Canadian Delegates likely did at the convention;
A: Mumbled amongst themselves but no one found the courage to say anything at a microphone?
B: Willingly joined-in heaping praises, kissing the rings and then voting for what they are certainly against?
C: Spoke out against Trump and the tariffs and held O’Brien accountable?

Trust me. The correct answer is not "C". Welcome to the Teamsters GEB as well as to those other appointed positions that provide an additional salary. This is our history. Bucks ($$$) before principles. Self-serving preservation. Makes me sick. No...not sick.
Furious!!! Now, I don't know that the Convention was the best time to "voice" their concerns". At that point, if you have not already voiced your concern...then ...fuck you! The points in time to have voiced concern would have been prior to the Convention while helping to set up opposition with dissent from SOB's ass kissing of Trump. Canadiens hate Trump. Canadiens have turned on Wayne Freakin' Gretzky simply because he does not call out Trump. Gretzky has been above God in Canada for decades. Now, he gets booed violently. Shame on Laporte and others for not tapping into that dissent when it was an opportunity. Like others throughout history, he prostituted himself. I don't know why Hooker did not make an effort to tap into that voting bloc. I would have been more than willing to work those Locals on his behalf.

Truly all the Canadians do is hop across the border four times a year and collect a fourth check from the members. They don't care who's in power as long as the checks don't bounce. They get their per cap tax rebated back. Truly just free money. If they bolted the IBT would be less than a million, thats the only tangible benefit it fluffs our membership numbers but not our bottom line.
