Attention, bargaining must take robotics seriously

    • Robot palletizing solutions: These machines automate the tedious and time-consuming process of packaging materials onto pallets for storage and transportation. Not only do robot palletizers drastically enhance processing efficiencies and improve production speeds, they also reduce the incidence of human error for better quality outcomes.

Robotics are now capable of things we thought were science fiction and getting more sophisticated everyday. We used to say at UPS “ when the computer drives the truck then tell us about numbats “ …….well…

Robotics and automated facilities are a big problem. Local unions and the IBT need to address these issues.

Indeed, the IBT needs an Automation Displacement Mitigation Department (ADMD) that would bring together rank-and-file workers, who put their names forward and are selected by lottery, with engineers, futurists, specialists in design and green technologies to develop a comprehensive set of plans. Some ideas are Up Training, contracts with automatic voluntary early retirement with full pension in industries / jobs most likely to be affected, green collective bargaining—putting green technology requirements onto every employer in each contract and using exclusivity clauses to make the solar panel installation and maintenance jobs, wind energy jobs, drivers for a fully electrified fleet (a requirement in some states by 2035) , making companies pay for technical and engineering certificates and degrees so future members can maintain and operate the machines—all this requires being honest and direct with the members, democratic and open, and accountable to future generations of workers.

"ADMD" is a great idea and I like the way Militant Teamster has structured it.
This is an important issue going forward. How do we as a union deal with technologies that are targeting the kinds of work that most of us do? There are organizations that talk about "fair transitions" but so far I'm not sure their really listening to the people doing the work. If anyone has doubts about the issue check out the Automation and Robotics newsfeed and video's on this site.

You are correct ! This is an issue that must be addressed, no putting our heads down and pretending that “ it can’t happen here “ . The technology is incredible! The advancements make it seem like science fiction come alive . The long term savings/profits will out weigh the initial costs of research and development.
