UPS to close down Portland facility...

Current and recently retired UPS workers in California recently spoke to WSWS reporters on the ongoing layoffs and the refusal of the union to fight for workers.

O'Brien had a chance to do something about automation at UPS and didn't. The ILA is willing to strike to save jobs.

According to multiple reports from operations management insiders, the UPS Swan Island hub is slated to close for "automation renovations" in 2025. Security personnel have shared that some managers have already notified them they will no longer be needed after March, strongly indicating layoffs are imminent. While the company has yet to make an official announcement, these developments raise significant concerns about the future of hundreds of local jobs.

Here’s the critical update: as of today, no permits have been issued by the City of Portland for these renovations. This means there is still time to voice our concerns and advocate for a fair transition plan that prioritizes workers and the local community.

We urge UPS employees, community members, and local officials to come together and take action:
        • Demand Transparency: Call on UPS to provide clear details about their plans and a timeline for changes.
        • Engage City Officials: Encourage the city to scrutinize any future permit applications and consider the broader impact on the Portland economy and workforce.
        • Strengthen Public Awareness: Share this update widely and build momentum to hold decision-makers accountable.

While we are not opposed to all automation, we must make a stand here. The rapid implementation of automation, without proper worker protections, reflects a system where corporations and governments have failed to provide safety nets for those displaced by technology. A pause is necessary—not to stop progress, but to ensure that this transformation works for working people, including UPS Teamsters and others who rely on these jobs to support themselves and their families. Together, we can push for a fairer, people-first approach to this transition.

Let’s act now to protect ourselves, our families and our community.

Reminder: UPS needs permits, Portland is a union town, we have leverage and power. Do not let fatalism deter you from action. UPS Swan Island provides many good paying union jobs for the Portland Metro Area. Decimating the workforce will be taken into consideration during the permit process. We do not intend to go gently into the night.

To the union's credit, they have been investigating. Ben Vedus has been very responsive in getting information he has to me in real time. The problem is the contract. UPS is under no obligation to give Local 162 any information about these "change of operations" until the 45 day window. If jobs are going to be permanently eliminated, then we can have 60 days under the WARN Act.

Here's what we are doing at the moment. We have a new City Council and Mayor. First step is talking to these elected officials about the permitting process and the larger problems associated with AI/automation job losses.

When you start helping us by searching for permits and calling the city and gathering information and giving it to the members and the local and looking at the ups properties owned in Multnomah County then you can talk

We all appreciate what your doing, if nothing else your pushing Vedus. to do his job. Not to throw cold water but isn't the new mayor owner of a nonunion trucking company? Don't let the negative comments slow you down its about time someone did something to fight back.

I respect Tony’s work and so do others — they may not show it but they do. Some do show it. People want information!

Layoffs at one UPS facility are layoffs for all of us - no area, no shift, no building is an island. Our union leadership must answer hard questions this Sunday at 10 AM during the union meeting:
                  1. Why weren’t automation protections, like those supported for dockworkers by our union president Sean O’Brien, included in our contract?
                  2. Why didn’t leadership act when they shut down the day shift, a clear warning sign?
                  3. How many more jobs will be lost, and will there truly be a net gain in full-time inside jobs with so many layoffs on the horizon?

UPS reported $91 billion in revenue in 2023 and remains highly profitable, generating billions in earnings while implementing automation that threatens our livelihoods. Their leadership emphasizes innovation, yet where is the protection for the workers who drive their success? These contradictions demand accountability.

Automation may improve efficiency, but without proper safeguards, it comes at the cost of people’s lives and communities. Let’s stand united and demand the justice and transparency we deserve.

Show up this Sunday. Ask tough questions. Stand together.

Thank you. Let me be clear: I do not trust Ben Vedus. However, I don't need to trust him. Should Swan Island go, after the trauma of losing day shift, many full-timers and long-time part-timers will still be members. And they will be very displeased working split shifts or preload, or back to loading trucks at 50+ after 25 or 30 years at the company. So, if not for his own salary - he's not far off from retirement - then the survival of the Davison regime, Vedus must deliver something. Because if Swan Island goes, then Davison goes. The dominoes won't stop falling until the entire local is in the hands of rebels.
