O’Brien Claims Federal Oversight Is Ending — But Buries the Lead

O’Brien Settles for Three More Years of Federal Government Oversight

Sean O’Brien tried to sell convention delegates and membership today on a false sense of finality —
claiming, as one of his first acts after being newly elected Teamsters General President at the 31st
Convention, that he was ending federal oversight of the Teamsters while leaving out the most important
fact. This is not final. It still needs court approval, and public reporting says federal government
oversight would continue for another three years.
That omission matters. Delegates and membership deserved the full truth, not a victory speech that
buried the lead and made it sound like federal oversight was ending today or soon. Investigations and
audits would continue during that three-year federal oversight period.
For those three years, corruption investigations would not simply stop. The Independent Investigations
Officer (IIO) — the officer responsible for investigating corruption and serious misconduct under the
Teamsters’ independent disciplinary system — would continue to play a role, and investigations and
audits would remain under independent review during the transition.
The IBT should immediately release both the actual joint filing and Judge Barbara Jones’ full report or
assessment to the membership. On an issue this significant — the proposed end of federal government
oversight of the Teamsters — members should not have to rely on a press release or selected
summaries. Every Teamster member should be allowed to review the documents for themselves.
Sources Noting This Is Not a Final Immediate End to Oversight
    • Reuters reported that the Teamsters and DOJ asked Judge Loretta Preska to approve the agreement, meaning
the filing still requires court approval.
    • Axios reported that the independent monitor role would be phased out over three years, unless the court finds
    continued oversight is still needed.
    • TDU reported that Judge Barbara Jones would continue oversight for three years, including independent review
of investigations and audits during the transition.

Thanks for this factual update. The PR spin reminds me off the way Sean's mentor Trump describes his big "victory" over Iran. It pays to read the small print.

Sounds as if SOB presented this speech in the same manner that he sold the UPS contract.

I hear his close entourage are privately suggesting they'll beat Pres. Tobin' 45 years at the helm. Not sure about Fred being there the whole way, but who knows? When you buy it all and suck up to the feds, it could be real!!

We need to be prepared to deal with the next president and stop supporting candidates who don’t support labor regardless of which party they are in.
