28,000 Air-Conditioned UPS Package Cars, Historic!

In 1994, the Teamsters led by President Ron Carey, protested a United Parcel Service (UPS) policy that abruptly increased the maximum individual package weight a member will lift from the limit of 70 lbs. to 150 lbs. The one-day walkout successfully forced UPS to agree that no worker would be required to lift packages over 70 pounds, alone.

In August 1997, IBT President Ron Carey, UPS members, with overwhelming public support, struck UPS staying out for just over a few weeks. UPS agreed to among other improvements, new full-time jobs from part-time positions. A huge win for rank-&- file, Labor Unions and workers.

During the 2023 UPS contract negotiations, Teamster President Sean O’Brien and Teamster members “Practiced Picketing” resulting in the self-proclaimed “Historic Contract.” UPS agreed to Air Condition 28,000 new package cars or about 30% of its 94,000 USA brown delivery vehicles over the life of the contract.

In 2025, as UPS slow walked A/C upgrades, Teamster President Sean O’Brien announced a second agreement that UPS would expedite 5,000 A/C delivery vehicles

In the video below, O’Brien states that UPS delivered the first 2,000 of the 5,000 A/C package cars as of June 1, 2026.

O’Brien also states that by June of 2027, UPS agrees to deliver another 3,000 of the 5,000 of the 2023 “Historic Contract” 28,000 A/C package cars.

Almost three years later, delivering 2,000 A/C package cars is 2 % of the entire fleet, or 7% of the agreed 28,000.

Almost four years later, if UPS delivers another 3,000 of the newly agreed 5,000, of the 2023 agreed 28,000 A/C cars, would be 5% of the entire 2023 fleet numbers, or 18% of the agreement reached in the “Historic Contract.”

No information was provided after the June 1, 2027 total of 5,000 of the 2023 agreement 28,000 A/C package cars. The current UPS Teamsters National Master Agreement expires a year after the June 1, 2027 date on July 31, 2028.

Will UPS deliver the remaining 23,000 of the agreed 28,000 A/C package cars in the 2023 contract? At the very least will UPS upgrade 30% of whatever the reduced number of package cars that remain?

Perhaps YES! That is as long as you are willing to include UPS’s subcontracting Roadie as they likely have A/C in their personal package “Cars.”

    What is the saying?

    TALK TOUGH!

    SETTLE SHORT!

    CLAIM VICTORY!

That defines the entire contract, certainly NOT Historic.
