Is anyone going to have the courage to actually bring one of these forward? I wonder if every O’Brien supporter will walk out?

These are great amendments, thanks to the author or authors. These are legitimate proposals and good language. I can't wait to hear the reasons that they can't be approved. Where's the reformers on these issues?

They are mystical personas who may or may not have existed in a past era. Many stories of their past alleged accomplishments that seem implausible by modern day realities of their organizations political alliances with the antithesis of everything they once stood for.
Best explanation I can come up with.

While we are at it, I'd like all stewards elected by the members they're representing. No more appointments.

That doesn't happen in your local? Change the bylaws!

I posted the amendment I proposed. I have a delegate willing to back it and I'm trying to see if I can go to the convention to help get signatures

Good ideas, would help with the next UPS negotiations. I'm not optimistic that they would ever pass, they like keeping us in the dark it's much easier to manipulate us.

        Current Language

Currently, Language in our Constitution gives Local Union Executive Boards the discretion to appoint stewards or allow for their election, often leading to appointed-only systems that members feel are less accountable.

        Proposed Amendment Text

Article XXI (Shop Stewards) shall be amended to read as follows:

Shop Stewards shall be mandated to be elected by the membership they represent at their respective places of employment.

        (a) Every Local Union shall provide in its Bylaws for the democratic election of all Shop Stewards by the members in good standing within the specific unit, craft, or shop the steward is to represent.

        (b) To ensure Local Union autonomy, the specific method of nomination, the frequency of elections (terms of office), and the specific balloting procedures (e.g., show of hands at a shop meeting or secret mail-in ballot) shall be determined by the membership of each Local Union and codified in their respective Local Union Bylaws, provided such procedures do not conflict with the minimum standards of fairness set forth by the International Union.

        (c) This provision shall not prevent a Local Union Executive Board from appointing an interim steward to fill a vacancy until such time as a special election can be held, pursuant to the Local’s Bylaws.

Accountability: Stewards are the first line of defense for the contract. Members deserve a representative they have chosen, ensuring the steward is accountable to the workers, not just the officers who appointed them.

Engagement: Electing stewards encourages rank-and-file participation and identifies natural leaders within the shops.

Autonomy: By leaving the method and term of the elections to the Locals, this amendment respects the diverse needs of different industries (e.g., Movie/Trade Show vs. UPS vs. Freight) while upholding the core principle of union democracy.
