I saw this on Facebook, written by Ken Reinman the author of a book on Carey .

On this day, December 11, 2008, also a Thursday, Ron Carey, died. Author and writer Ken Crowe called him the nation’s most charismatic and successful labor leader as the 20th century was coming to an end due to just two of his accomplishments: running as a reformer and becoming the first elected General President of the IBT and leading a successful strike against UPS in 1997.

Since then the Teamsters had over 20 years of Hoffa Jr bowing to Corporate America and 4 years of Sean O’Brien bending the knee to anti-union politicians. Ron Carey never bent the knee. He told all, whether Corporate America or anti-union politicians to shove it!

Status quo leaders like Hoffa and O’Brien accepted concessions, automation and A.I. and became friendly with the political class. During Ron’s tenure, he took on the mainstream political class: he took on Bill Clinton and the pro-NAFTA ideology which infected both parties (mostly the GOP though.)

Ron never lowered himself or his office by appearing at a Mar a Lago, bending the knee and taking a photo with any anti-union politicians. He never would be bought with the possibility of speaking at any party’s political convention. He’d be outside protesting the greed and corruption of how the parties were owned by Corporate America.

Ron was a fighter and a crusader for his members and their families. He mobilized us and we took on the behemoth that was UPS and part-time America and were successful. We weren’t play acting. We were actually out on the streets STRIKING! We shut down Big Brown! The current administration prefers fake strikes and inviting politicians and celebrities onto his podcast when he’s not at the gym.

Moreover, Ron Carey never gave our hard-earned dues $ to anti-union politicians or parties. After NAFTA passed, Ron refused to endorse Clinton and shut off the spigot. He welcomed their hatred. Today, we have O’Brien timidly appearing before Congress, bowing to their perches, and refusing to take Trump and his party to task for the mass firing of federal union workers! He even continues to handover more Teamster dues money to the anti-union Republicans. We live in an upside down world these days, brothers and sisters.

Tim Sylvester summed up who Ron Carey was: “Ron was a threat to Corporate America and to Old Guard Teamster officials who feared him because he threatened their personal bottom line and made them look impotent in comparison. He was taken away too early, not just with his death, but he was taken away from us ten years ago by a system that didn’t allow anyone as good as he was to remain in power in our union…” Indeed. Maybe that is why current leaders never speak of Ron Carey and his legacy. They too look impotent in comparison. They couldn’t shine Ron’s shoes…

That’s ok I’m sure he never liked you either , Obrien has certainly made TDU HIS buddies and most certainly hired more TDU staff and flunkies then Carey ever did.
