Please see my comment below regarding the JC10 Instagram post on US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse's visit to Local 251. Biden is not perfect. Like many others, I support an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, full and immediate access for humanitarian aid there, and self-determination for the Palestinian people. But there should be no question about where Biden and the Democrats stand on labor issues, relative to Trump and the Republicans.

United States Senator Sheldon Whitehouse spoke recently at the Teamsters Local 251 General Membership Meeting. Senator Whitehouse was elected to the US Senate in 2006 and has a long-standing relationship with labor. He is the Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and the Caucus on International Narcotics Control, and also serves as a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, the Environment and Public Works Committee, and the Finance Committee.

  Senator Whitehouse ended his speech to Local 251 active members and Local 251 retirees, by saying: “And remember, it was Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress that voted to save workers’ multi-employer pension funds.” Not one Republican in Congress voted for that bill. This received a loud applause from the rank and file Local 251 members. The Butch Lewis Act guarantees our hard earned pensions through the year 2051. We worked for and were promised our pension benefits. Thanks to the Democrats in Congress and the White House, we can retire in dignity. Thanks from the bottom of my heart! Signed:

Hey, what I left out in my above post, is that the Butch Lewis Act would never have become law, if not for the thousands of rank and file retirees and active members that fought for protecting our pension benefits; they are the heroes here. But, notwithstanding that, the entire Rhode Island congressional delegation voted against the 2014 Omnibus bill that opened the door to potential benefit cuts and changed the benefit guarantees pursuant to ERISA.
O’Brien backed the “UPS Plan” that started with 20% benefit cuts. O’Brien said he was doing so, because, “Everyone should have skin in the game.” We gave plenty of skin, sweat, and blood, to realize improvements Teamsters pension fund benefits; including taking less in wages to increase employer contributions.
I’ll be 99 in 2051, young Teamsters need to keep fighting to preserve what they work hard to earn. The struggle must continue. Trump and his allies want to empower themselves. An empowered rank and file in the Union, a Union run from the bottom up , will win!
