UPS Executives Meet March 26th, Discuss Increasing Volume/Revenue and Automation

Network of the Future is the new automation plan that UPS executives are cooking up.

"We executed the strategy we set forth nearly three years ago by changing almost every aspect of our business. After coming off a difficult market in 2023, the small package industry is poised to return to growth in 2024 and beyond. Over the next three years, we plan to make bold moves to create a growth flywheel in premium markets, while at the same time drive higher productivity and efficiency," said Carol Tomé, UPS chief executive officer. "The growth and productivity initiatives we are executing will result in higher revenue, expanded operating margins and increased free cash flow to deliver long-term value to our shareowners."

In addition, the company will share details about how it will lower its cost to serve through its Network of the Future initiative, a plan that will optimize and further automate its core integrated network.

Meanwhile, at a meeting on the Day Sort closure here in Portland, Oregon, Ben Vedus, negotiator for inside employees for the NMA, and speaking on behalf of Mark Davison and the IBT, stated that "Volume is decreasing and may stabilize by summer." He also did not want to discuss AI/automation.

In other words, the IBT/OZ/TDU are doing damage control for UPS, actively facilitating these layoffs and attempting to stifle any anger by helping the company's narrative that it is broke. When did the union become the HR and PR department of UPS? Well, since this ridiculous contract has no AI/automation protections, it is clear that this current administration must cover for UPS, as they would lose all credibility if people knew the truth:
    • Volume is returning.
    • UPS made 2.5 billion in profit over the last four months of 2023
    • Automation will "mitigate" labor costs, decreasing the workforce by some 50-80% according to industry insiders through the Network of the Future Initiative.
These are facts. A much smaller bargaining unit will mean underfunded pensions, health and welfare funds and less union bargaining power.
ATLANTA, March 26, 2024--UPS (NYSE:UPS) will host its investor and analyst conference today at its Worldport air hub in Louisville, KY beginning at 9:15 a.m. ET. At the conference, the company will share details of its strategic growth and productivity initiatives and discuss its three-year financial targets. The event will also be available through a live webcast and replay at investors.ups.com.

Howard and I were working on this before he died. "The petition is a statement, it's the start." That's what he said every time he talked about it to Steve Zeltzer, Barry Anderson and others. We need a mass national mobilization to begin the work of countering the "Network of the Future" - we need our own Network of the Future! We need to be honest about the failures of the 2023-2028 CBA. We need to bring shame to UPS for being a job destroyer. We need to activate what Howard called a "community of interest." I am terribly sad at his death. He was my friend, my mentor and provided me with the steely reserve needed to take on Davison and Vedus. He will be missed. The work must continue, because that's what he would have wanted. We must not let UPS/OZ control the narrative as tens of thousands of UPS Teamsters are tossed away for robots.

Finally, Howard helped start, craft and create the Independent Teamsters Organizing Committee. He saw this fight coming. He was right. UPS is mobilizing - we need to unite and mobilize too.

The Independent Teamsters Organizing Committee (ITOC) was formed in direct response to the 2024 mass layoffs of UPS Teamsters, driven by AI/automation and corporate greed, and permitted by Teamster leaders.

Our mission is to empower the working class by resisting exploitation, asserting control over the means of production, and establishing a new economic system where technology serves workers. Right now, no UPS Teamster job is safe, and millions of other jobs are on verge of being wiped out from the coming AI/automation revolution.

Focused on practical solutions, ITOC advocates for collective decision-making on workplace technology, opposes AI/automation-induced layoffs, and demands alternatives prioritizing job retention. We are organizing to keep our healthcare, paychecks and pensions by building solidarity with other logistics/shipping workers, warehouse workers, tech workers and the entire working class. We adhere to the No Strike Clause but strive to abolish it. Urgently supporting a massive general strike now is crucial; delay risks irreversible consequences.

Internationally, we stand in solidarity with all workers, acknowledging the struggle against capitalist exploitation is universal.

ITOC is, above all, a radical-democratic organizing force and a constant work in progress, united as rank-and-file Teamster members alongside our fellow workers.

      Join us.

      It’s almost too late.

Well Carol said what SOB won’t — automation is going to significantly lower labor costs = mass layoffs

Remember, there is one constant through all of the oz debacle. They don't care about anything but getting re-elected. Yellow can't vote, displaced UPS workers can't vote. So their plan...if they say how great they are enough, members will believe it. Eliminate opposition by using their political weapons; the govt, and the IIO, and they will be in office for years to come. Oh, and no opposition from tdu...horrible.

Exactly, these guys are in this for themselves. O'Baldy will go down in history as the biggest douche to ever run the Teamsters.

UPS is making it pretty clear what their plans are and they involve a lot less teamsters.
