ANHEUSER-BUSCH LETS DOWN WORKERS — AGAIN

After Anheuser-Busch Teamsters successfully pushed the company to reach tentative agreement on critical health and welfare benefits on Thursday, the beermaker has returned to the stall tactics of a failed corporate playbook by refusing to discuss job security protections for workers.

Showing near contempt for its workforce, Anheuser-Busch walked away from contract negotiations as soon as the Teamsters asked for new assurances that the embattled brewer will maintain operations across its unionized U.S. facilities.

“If volume is down at Anheuser-Busch as a direct result of corporate missteps and marketing blunders, why should working people at these breweries suffer the consequences? In addition to higher wages and better benefits, the Teamsters are fighting for job security measures to protect our members from executive mismanagement,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “Managers who manufacture crises around branding aren’t going to solve their problems by turning their backs on Teamsters who manufacture the beer. Our members aren’t going to tolerate disrespect from yet another billion-dollar C-suite.”

In the wake of marketing issues with the Bud Light brand, rank-and-file Teamsters at Anheuser-Busch are routinely pressured to get more done in less time. A loss in overtime hours has led to cuts in take-home pay for workers as the corporation tries to squeeze as much as it can from labor.

Despite tension on the shop floor, Anheuser-Busch InBev easily paid out $40.1 million in 2022 to its CEO and recently announced a $1 billion stock buyback program.

“When it comes to polished corporate sponsorships or lining the pockets of investors, Anheuser-Busch has plenty of money to throw around,” said Jeff Padellaro, Director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference. “Working people who run this company have earned their fair share and they deserve to know their jobs are not on the line whenever management suffers a self-inflicted wound. Anheuser-Busch needs to get back to the table now and do right by its workforce.”
