In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, Michael T Borjas, the Illinois Teamster Training Fund Executive Director, and Apprentice Coordinator Damon Wilson were recognized at an event held by the US Department of Labor on Monday. Since 2002, the training fund has provided a rigorous construction apprenticeship program designed to provide the necessary skills required for Teamsters to thrive in the construction industry and stay safe on the job.
The training center in Joliet, Illinois, is a mobile facility and serves the entire region. It offers 40 courses and teaches skills like defensive driving, load securement, boom truck training, hazardous waste courses, and CDL training. In the past 10 years, more than 15,000 Teamsters, including military veterans who are trained at no cost, have advanced their construction industry careers thanks to the training center's classes.
“Our goal is to keep Teamsters gainfully employed. Most importantly, I want them to come home to their families safe,” Borjas said.
