Last night, Teamster members, hundreds of union workers, and community allies rallied outside MotorCity Casino Hotel to support Teamsters Local 1038 and our brothers and sisters from the Detroit Casino Council (DCC), who have been on strike since October 17. AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler also joined the rally.

Detroit casino workers were forced to launch a wall-to-wall strike at MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino At Greektown after the casino operators, despite record profits, refused to offer a fair contract that provides good benefits and livable wages.

“Detroit’s casinos must get serious at the bargaining table and stop bullying the union workers who made them so profitable. It is disgraceful that, despite record profits, these casino operators refuse to provide our members with good health care or pay them a living wage,” said Greg Nowak, President of Local 1038.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Detroit casino workers sacrificed raises and shouldered heavier workloads so the industry could recover.

In 2022, Detroit’s three casinos generated a record $2.27 billion in gaming revenue, and the industry is on track for another record-breaking year in 2023.

Representing over 3,700 union workers, the Detroit Casino Council comprises Local 1038, UNITE HERE Local 24, UAW International Union Local 7777, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights. DCC members perform various jobs, including valet, front desk, food and beverage, housekeeping, retail outlets, slot and table games, and engineering.
