Teamsters leaders, officers, business agents, and stewards from across the East gathered in New York City Tuesday for the first of the union’s biannual regional meetings, focused on building the power of the International Union and strengthening the fight for working people nationwide.



Attendees heard reports from Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien and General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman, as well as updates on major organizing and contract campaigns.



The meeting comes just weeks after the Teamsters announced that the union has added 100,000 new members over the past four years under the O’Brien-Zuckerman administration. O’Brien challenged the union to build on that momentum, committing the Teamsters to organizing 250,000 new members over the next five years — and to running the strongest UPS campaign in Teamsters history in 2028.



“We all rise and fall together. We cannot forget that,” O’Brien said. “So when we get together for these regional meetings — and we assess the state of our union — we have to remember what we’re elected to do every day. All decisions and investments we make must align to make the Teamsters bigger, faster, and stronger for generations to come.”



Attendees also heard from Tom Gesualdi, President of Teamsters Joint Council 16 and Teamsters Local 282; Sunshine McBride, Director of the Department of Political and Legislative Action; Chris Rosell, Director of the Teamsters Organizing Department; and Will Petty, Director of the Teamsters Strategic Initiatives Department, as well as other Teamsters leaders. Tom Vitiello highlighted the launch of the Teamsters R.O.A.D.S. Program, a new initiative designed to provide support for members dealing with mental health, substance use, and recovery.



Following the regional meeting, the Teamsters Organizing Department held a daylong workshop with affiliates from across the East, laying out priorities and strategies for the union’s next phase of growth and preparing locals to help deliver on the commitment to organize 250,000 new Teamsters.



The Eastern meeting is the first in a series of regional meetings this fall, with the Southern Region meeting to follow in Orlando later this month.
