ONE MONTH UNTIL POTENTIAL LIRR WORK STOPPAGE — BUSIEST U.S. COMMUTER RAILROAD



A Presidential Emergency Board issued a recommendation to settle a dispute between Long Island Rail Road and a coalition of five unions, including the BLET of the Teamsters Rail Conference.



The PEB sided with the union coalition, recommending raises and back pay for workers and rejecting LIRR’s requests for sweeping work rule changes. If no agreement is reached, parties could engage in “self help” — either a lockout or a strike — as soon as May 16.



LIRR is the busiest commuter railroad in America, serving a quarter-million people a day. The BLET represents hundreds of Teamsters locomotive engineers at the MTA-owned carrier.
