Mark Wallace, President of the BLET of the Teamsters Rail Conference, released the following statement in support of the introduction of the Railway Safety Act of 2026.

“The BLET salutes Senators Jon Husted (R-OH) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) for sponsoring the Railway Safety Act and Vice President J.D. Vance for his commitment to reforming rail safety standards.

“Our nation doesn’t need another rail disaster like what we saw in East Palestine. Inaction by the rail industry since that catastrophe demonstrates that we can’t trust the major railroads to raise safety standards without action by Congress.

“Two-person train crews, set standards for defect detectors, stronger and more frequent inspections, tougher penalties, and improved hazardous materials notification are essential to protecting railroad workers and the public. These reforms will only happen if Congress passes the Railway Safety Act of 2026.”
