The clock is ticking for New Jersey Transit (NJT) to offer 450 Teamsters locomotive engineers a fair contract, with a potential strike looming on May 16.

“NJ Transit recently spent a half-billion dollars for unnecessary lavish new corporate headquarters. They have millions for penthouse views, but not a dime for train crews,” said Mark Wallace, who serves as the National President of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) and the Teamsters Rail Conference. “Our members have gone six years without a raise, and they went through mediation and two Presidential Advisory Boards. We’ve bargained in good faith. If we don’t get a fair settlement in the coming days, we’re prepared to strike.”

BLET members at NJT make it possible for hundreds of thousands of people to commute to their jobs, go to doctor’s appointments, and visit family. Despite their indispensable work, they are paid below the industry standard.

Members have been fighting for years for higher wages, better benefits, and stronger job security. While NJT spends hundreds of millions of dollars on real estate and premium parking spots, they refuse to give workers a fair contract. Their recent offer was rejected by an overwhelming 87% of BLET members at the carrier.
