Jeremy Ferguson has been re-elected as president of SMART-TD with a resounding majority, and while the leadership is celebrating, we need to ask ourselves a crucial question: Is SMART-TD truly representing every member? With all top officers running uncontested, it’s clear that our current system might be shutting out the voices that need to be heard. A one member, one vote system could bring more democracy to the ranks and ensure that #raillabor’s leadership is accountable to every single member.
Successes have been achieved, no doubt, but real strength in a union comes from broad participation and leadership that answers to the people. Is it time to open up the process and give every member a real say in our future?
SMART-TD retains the momentum built over the past five years under President Jeremy Ferguson and his leadership team. “This union is winning on all accounts, across the board, including in arbitration, negotiations and mediation,” Ferguson said in his acceptance speech. Elections were held August 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The massive railroad and transit union remains focused on member safety, quality of life and upcoming contract negotiations.
