PIPELINE TEAMSTERS CONVENE IN TEXAS, INVEST IN MEMBER TRAINING
Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien and General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman met with rank-and-file Teamsters from across the pipeline construction industry in San Antonio, Texas, on Monday during the division’s conference that provides ongoing training and education for workers.
Pipeline Teamsters are participating in stewards trainings and other workshops addressing the competitive and technical challenges of their critical yet dangerous work. The union is strategizing to expand work opportunities across the industry, enforce better government rules and safety standards, and build alliances with labor partners to improve public awareness of the essential work of Pipeline Teamsters nationwide.
“The construction and maintenance work that our members perform on the nation’s pipelines is vital to public services and the overall function of the country. And these are not easy jobs. Teamsters regularly put their lives on the line in this industry and their labor is often unseen by the general public,” O’Brien said. “We must continue to invest in strengthening safety standards along our pipelines while safeguarding the wages, benefits, and livelihoods of this valuable workforce.”
Last summer, the Teamsters ratified a new national master agreement with the Pipe Line Contractors Association that covers 3,500 Teamster pipeliners. The three-year contract includes a three percent wage increase each year, a six percent health care increase each year, and improved working conditions and guidelines. The contract was approved by more than 100 Teamsters local unions.
