Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman and International Vice Presidents Tom Erickson and Mark Davison met with members early Tuesday morning at the Fred Meyer distribution center in Clackamas, Oregon. The three Teamsters leaders are talking with rank-and-file members about their priorities and goals ahead of contract talks with the company that are set to begin in March.
Teamsters at the center work in dry grocery, frozen foods, produce, deli, general merchandise and as mechanics. They are represented by Locals 162, 206, and 305. Fred Meyer was acquired by Kroger in 1998.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission said Monday that it is suing to block Kroger’s $24.6 billion acquisition of Albertson’s as the combination of the two grocers would result in higher prices for shoppers and lower wages for workers. A bipartisan group of nine attorney generals from Arizona, California, Washington D.C., Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Wyoming has joined the court complaint.
