On Saturday, Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) addressed a packed house of over 250 stewards at Teamsters Local 120’s Steward Appreciation Dinner, commemorating the union’s 120-year anniversary.
In her impassioned speech, Sen. Klobuchar reaffirmed her commitment to fighting for workers, emphasizing that her journey to Washington was not about serving corporate lobbyists but standing up for working people in Minnesota and across the country.
“Your union has a long tradition of standing up for workers in our state and doing what’s right, ensuring that the American Dream is more than just a dream,” she said. “Local 120, thank you for leading the way. Because when unions are strong, our economy is strong. And when our economy is strong, America is strong.”
Sen. Klobuchar, herself the granddaughter of an iron ore miner and union member, painted a vivid picture of Minnesota's rich labor legacy. Expressing gratitude to Teamsters Local 120, she acknowledged the union's strong heritage in Minnesota, highlighting the historic Minneapolis Teamsters Strike of 1935 – a pivotal, watershed moment in American labor history that led to the passage of the National Labor Relations Act.
Addressing the current climate and challenges facing workers, Sen. Klobuchar called out Yellow Corp., underscoring the pressing need for corporate bankruptcy reform.
