Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien spoke on Thursday at the Irish Echo’s inaugural Irish Maritime Awards in New York, honoring workers of Irish descent whose commitments and contributions have shaped the maritime economy. O'Brien presented the Global Gateway Champion award to Rich Davey of Massport, which has helped create good-paying jobs for thousands of workers in Massachusetts, including Teamsters.



“For generations, Irish people on both sides of the pond, including countless rank-and-file Teamsters, have done so much in the pursuit of a better life through their labor. That hard work has grown our economies larger and ensured that growth is shared fairly by those who powered it,” O’Brien said. “As descendants of the Emerald Isle, events like this give us the chance to reflect on the things that unite us rather than divide us. To think not just about where we come from but also where we’re going. And importantly, to honor the people who have shaped our maritime economy and who will continue to shape it in the future."
