This week, Bridget Quinn, Legislative Director of Teamsters Joint Council 10, testified in front of the Connecticut State House Finance, Revenue, and Bonding Committee. She spoke on the record against H.B. 5537, a bill that would impose a tax on certain sweetened beverages.

Taxes like this fall directly on rank-and-file Teamsters who make, move, and deliver beverage products every single day. It also disproportionately impacts low- and middle-class families at the grocery store who are facing rising costs in nearly every aspect of their daily lives. Rather than strengthening Connecticut’s economy, this bill will do the opposite.

“If Connecticut adopts this beverage tax, it will directly affect our industry across the state,” Quinn said. “No child should ever go hungry. However, using a beverage tax as a funding mechanism in this bill, we can do better, and we can work together to find other ways to tackle food insecurity.”
