Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien concluded a series of site visits in San Diego with a stop to meet members of Teamsters Local 481 at the San Diego Zoo. Joined by International Vice President Victor Mineros and Local 481 Secretary-Treasurer Erin Borgardt, O’Brien spoke to members about the gains secured in their new agreement and emphasized the importance of strong, consistent contract enforcement.

Local 481 represents more than 1,800 animal keepers, animal care specialists, ticket-takers, retail clerks, building, grounds, and restaurant workers. In June, following a credible strike threat, the Teamsters who make the San Diego Zoo run ratified a new collective bargaining agreement that delivered a 20 percent wage increase, improved working conditions, and enhanced benefits.

“Our union represents everyone from airline pilots to zookeepers. It’s not just a catchy saying. It’s a testament to the power the Teamsters have across the diverse range of industries we represent,” O’Brien said. “Working at the San Diego Zoo, a world-class institution, is difficult and demanding — caring for guests, protecting wildlife, and keeping these facilities running every day. Today, our members proudly have a contract that truly reflects the value and importance of the work they do.”
